How Large Do Pitbulls Get

How Big Do Pitbulls Get?

Pit bulls are a type of dog, rather than a breed, not to be confused with the American pit bull terrier (APBT), which is a breed. The phrase "pit bull" refers to any dog resembling a pit bull, whether it is a purebred ABPT or a mixed breed. However, even pit bull mixes are usually about the same size as a purebred ABPT.

Average

According to "ASPCA Complete Guide to Dogs," the average size for a pit bull is 18 to 22 inches from the ground to the highest point of the dog's shoulder.

Weight

The average weight is 50 to 70 pounds, with the males usually weighing more than the females because they have more muscle.

Variances

Because of the variety of breeds that can produce a pit bull-type dog, weights can range from as little as 22 pounds up to 110 pounds.

Other Names

The American Kennel Club does not recognize the APBT as a breed, but will call it the American Staffordshire terrier. These dogs range from 17 to 19 inches tall and average 50 to 65 pounds.

Puppies

Newborn pit bull puppies average four pounds at birth, but often weigh less, especially if the litter is large.
