House Sign Ideas

Purchase a custom-designed sign.

If you are moving into a new house, then you may want a new address nameplate. If you have an aggressive dog, you may want to warn visitors--like your postal carrier. If you are trying to sell your house, you will want to inform people who drive by your house. All of these situations can be addressed through the use of creative, tasteful signs that you can have custom-designed to fit your needs.

Granite Address Markers

Instead of hanging the traditional metal numbers on your house, consider ordering an address marker that is little more creative and unique. You can custom order a granite block with your address etched into the stone. You can choose from a variety of shades of granite--from gray to green--and customize two lines of "text." The top line is for your house number and the second line is for your street name. This marker complements a house that has a natural, earthy or mountain theme.

Metal Beware of Dog Signs

Instead of the typical, glaring "Beware of Dog" in black and orange, consider a more classy and elegant sign that informs visitors of the dog behind the door. Select a metal garden sign or a metal address plaque that can be customized with the dog announcement. Instead of having "Beware of Dog" engraved on the metal plaque, consider a softer phrase such as "Kindly watch the dog."

For Sale Signs

When it comes to selling your house, you need a catchy, colorful sign. Order a metal sign that can be placed in a metal sign frame and pushed into your yard. Avoid a lot of text. Make the "FOR SALE" or "FOR SALE BY OWNER" the largest of your words, and make sure the words are printed in all capitals. The second-most important information is your contact information. You want this information large enough that drivers who are passing by can see the information and jot it down without stopping and getting out of their car.

Garden Signs

If you have a garden that is in front of your house, such as in front of a bay window or even in flower boxes at your windows, then consider placing a decorative garden sign in the soil. There are a variety of garden signs to use in front of your house--some informational and some whimsical. For example, you can have a metal garden sign customized with the name of your garden, like "Molly's Rose Garden." Or you have a sign customized to indicate the little creatures who live in the garden, with names like "Squirrel Crossing" or "Land of the Gnomes." Be creative and you'll create a charming space in front of your house using signs.
