House Break Lab Mixes

Potty train your Lab-mix puppy with confidence.

An adorable Lab-mix puppy is a great addition to any family. These furry creatures make great companions and are fun to play with or cuddle with. Lab-mix puppies crave human attention and become very protective of their family. The Lab-mix puppy should be trained as soon as possible to prevent any bad habits from developing. Potty training can be easily achieved if the owner is consistent and praises the puppy for doing well.

Instructions

1. Watch your puppy closely during the first few weeks of potty training. Puppies will begin to sniff around when they need to go out or they will squat on the floor. If you see your puppy beginning to squat, pick him up and take him outside.

2. Take the puppy outside 10 minutes after eating or drinking. Puppies need to go to the bathroom shortly after eating or drinking because their bladder and other organs are not fully developed at this stage. Monitoring their water and food intake will help prevent accidents from occurring indoors.

3. Take the puppy outside consistently throughout the day while training. During this time do not let your Lab-mix puppy play. Lab-mix puppies love to play outdoors but they need to distinguish between a time to play and a time to go potty. Try and use the same door and the same area each time the puppy goes outside. If you are consistent with the puppy, it will help your pet learn to communicate with you when it needs to go to the bathroom.

4. Praise your puppy each time it goes outside with words of encouragements and special treats. Lab-mix puppies love to please their owners and get special attention from them. Let your puppy know that it has done a good job by going potty in the appropriate area. Give a treat to the puppy as soon as he finishes going potty to reward him for his good behavior. Do not scold the puppy if a mistake happens inside; instead, pick the puppy up and bring him to the designated area to finish.

5. Put the puppy in a training kennel when you cannot keep watch over him. Prior to putting the puppy in the kennel take him out to go potty. The puppy can stay in the kennel for up to four hours at a time. Lab-mix puppies generally like the kennel because it make them feel safe and secure. Accidents rarely occur when a puppy is in the kennel because it becomes their "home." The kennel can also give your Lab-mix puppy boundaries when they have moments of hyperactivity. Never use the kennel as a punishment for the puppy when an accident occurs. This will make the puppy afraid of the kennel.
