Physical & Behavior Growth And Development Of A Puppy At Week Two

At two weeks of age, a puppy may begin to see and hear things around him.

For the first three weeks of a puppy's life, he is completely dependent on his mother, however his body and brain develop on a daily basis. All puppies are born blind, deaf and without a sense of smell, and all puppies do not develop at the same rate or during a specific time period because all puppies are different. SmallDogsParadise.com states that how and when a puppy develops is largely based on their personality.

There are a few developmental changes that may go on during the second week of the puppy's life; this stage is also known a the transitional stage, according to the puppynetwork.com.

Eyes Open

A puppy's eyes should open between one to two weeks of age. He will begin to respond to light and movement after his eyes open, and he will begin to explore the world around him. He will begin recognizing his mother, litter mates and any toys or items placed around him.

Ears Open

A puppy's ears will open and he will begin hearing sounds. This typically happens between day 13 and 17. He may also begin to recognize voices around him.

Weight Gain

Within the first seven to 10 days of life, a puppy should double her birth weight. She should be weighed daily for the first two weeks and then weekly, using a food scale.

Other Development

A puppy will also begin to whimper when he is uncomfortable, hungry, or cold. He may begin trying to walk during this stage, preparing him for the third week which includes the puppy standing to walk, playing, lapping liquids and the growth of teeth.
