Dog runs are ideal for energetic dogs that like to spend time outdoors. Dog runs come in all different shapes and sizes to accommodate small and large dogs, as well as small and large yards. Concrete dog runs are a good choice for several reasons, cleanliness being the most important. This type of dog run allows owners to easily wash off any waste or debris and disinfect the dog run area, giving the dogs a safe and clean environment.
Instructions
1. Determine where you want to construct the dog run. Consider how much sun and shade your yard gets and where you dog would be the most comfortable.
2. Decide the size of your dog run. Dog runs should ideally be at least 10-feet wide, and the length can be determined by the size of your yard or the fencing you've chosen to surround the dog run.
3. Use metal stakes to map out where your dog run will be, and attach strings to create an outline of the kennel size. Use a tape measure to determine the dimensions of the kennel, so you can calculate how much fencing and concrete you need to purchase.
4. Dig down 2 to 3 inches in the area where the concrete will be poured. Create forms around this area using metal stakes and wood boards. The concrete slab should be at least 4 inches thick.
5. Cover the area where the concrete will be poured with a layer of stone.
6. Mix and pour the concrete inside the forms or have a company deliver and pour the desired amount of concrete. Your slab must be on a slight angle so that urine and waste can easily run off or be washed away with a hose.
7. Use a broom to brush the surface of the concrete after it has been poured and leveled. Concrete that is too smooth can cause a slipping hazard for dogs. Brushing the concrete with a broom gives the dog some traction without making the surface too rough.
8. Install your choice of fencing around the concrete slab. Fences must be at least 5-feet high, and kennels with a roof are recommended for dogs that like to jump.
