A nostalgic party wouldn't be complete without a poodle skirt.
A well-made poodle skirt can transform the atmosphere of a 1950s style party through fashion and nostalgia. While it's easy enough to buy a pink skirt and draw a poodle with fabric markers, an authentic looking poodle skirt will bow out from the body and feature a detailed poodle on its classic black leash. To get the traditional look, start from scratch to make a poodle skirt for your body measurements.
Instructions
1. Measure from your waist down to where you want the skirt to end for the length of the skirt. Measure around your waist. Divide the waist measurement by four and add to the length.
2. Fold the felt in half width-wise and then lengthwise. Note which corner is the center of the fabric. Mark a curved arch on the fabric by measuring from the center corner across the fabric the totaled length measurement and rotating the measuring tape end with a fabric marker in hand.
3. Mark a second arch from the center corner, this time using the waist measurement divided by four as the distance. Cut through all four layers of fabric along the two curved lines. Unfold the felt to reveal a doughnut-like piece for the skirt.
4. Add 1 inch to the full waist measurement and cut out a long rectangle of fabric this long by 4 inches wide. Fold the rectangle in half width-wise to pair the two short ends. Sew across the ends a ½-inch in from the ends to form a loop.
5. Fold the loop in half so it is only 2 inches tall with the short ends trapped inside. Slip the loop over the waist opening of the skirt. Pair and pin the raw edges of the loop along the opening of the skirt. Sew around the paired edges to connect the waistband to the skirt, but leave a 1-inch opening along the back of the skirt.
6. Cut a length of elastic to your waist measurement. Snake the elastic through the 1-inch opening and around the inside of the waistband until it comes out the other end. Pair the ends of the elastic together and sew across them to hold. Slip the elastic ends through the opening and sew the opening closed.
7. Determine where you want to position the poodle iron-on along the front of the skirt and pin it in place. Cut a 2-foot length of bias tape. Tuck one end of the tape a ½-inch under the neck of the poodle decal and pin. Loop and pin the rest of the tape around the skirt as desired.
8. Sew down the bias tape with a zigzag stitch starting near the poodle and working away from it. Set your iron to the appropriate heat setting and follow the directions on the decal packaging to affix the poodle to the skirt.
