Train Tracker Dogs Employed By The Military

Dogs can be trained for tracking.

Military working dogs are highly driven dogs that must have at least rudimentary tracking skills. Training a tracking dog is done slowly, methodically and carefully in order to ensure that the dog understands scent theory. Before beginning tracking training, the dog needs to know basic obedience.

Instructions

1. Stomp out a scent pad at the start of the track and liberally sprinkle treats all over it. Take about 10 heel-to-toe steps, placing a treat under your foot at every step. At the end of the track, jump as far to the side as you can, and walk back to your dog.

2. Harness your dog and attach the long line. Take him to the scent pad and let him find the treats. He should naturally use his nose to find each treat along the track.

3. Train on the short tracks until your dog follows them with no difficulty. Gradually, add distance to the tracks and decrease the amount of treats on the track.

4. Place turns in the track gradually, by adding slight bends in the track. Increase the angle on the bends until they are 90 degree turns. Initially, place treats at the corners of bends, but phase them out as soon as possible.

5. Allow your dog to always succeed. If you complete a long, difficult track, allow him to complete a shorter track, solely for the joy of finishing it. Intermixing difficult tasks with easier ones will keep your dog motivated.
