The Very Best Kinds Of Pet Food Bowls

A stainless steel bowl is one of the best types for dogs.

There are many types of dog food bowls from which to choose. Figuring out the best dog food bowl is confusing for many dog owners, because there is such a huge selection. Ignoring all the colors and shapes, the basic concerns are durability and function. By narrowing down your wants and needs, you can determine which type of dog food bowl is best for your canine companion.

Stainless Steel

Stainless steel dog bowls come in a variety of shapes and sizes. They are one of the most basic types of bowls and are available at any pet store. They are durable and inexpensive. Stainless steel bowls are dishwasher safe and lightweight, making them easy to transport from one location to another. They are virtually indestructible, even when presented to dogs who chew on their supplies. Some stainless steel bowls are designed to be tip-resistant, with an added rubber pad providing extra insurance against food spills. This is the best type of bowl for a dog owner who wants a basic, easily replaceable model.

Elevated Bowls

Elevated dog bowls consist of a plastic, metal or wood stand with two ceramic, metal or plastic bowls resting inside. These stands are designed to keep food and water dishes off the ground, preventing spills and aiding in digestion. Because the dog does not have to lean over to reach its food, large dogs find them particularly comfortable to use. Elevated dog bowls are moderately priced and found at most pet stores. They are ideal for dogs with spinal problems, chronic gastrointestinal problems or dogs who like to tip over their bowls. Elevated bowls are much harder for owners to trip over due to increased visibility and a decreased ability to be moved by the dog.

Automatic Feeders

There are two schools of thought on feeding dogs. Some owners prefer to feed their dog at set intervals, controlling how much food the dog eats and when. Other owners like to "free feed" their dogs, allowing them access to unlimited quantities of food at their discretion. Automatic feeders are standard metal, ceramic or plastic bowls equipped with a reservoir to refill the bowl. For dog owners who are hesitant to free feed, there are electronic automatic dog bowls that allow the owner to program a time and amount of food to dispense.

Travel Bowls

Travel food bowls are collapsible bowls made of plastic, nylon or other synthetic materials. They can be soft or hard. Travel dog food bowls are moderately expensive, with cheaper models being found in dollar and discount stores. Foldable or collapsible dog food bowls are the best dog food bowl choice for owners who take their dogs on long hikes, excursions or day trips.
