Training pens are a helpful option for beagle puppy owners.
Training and raising a beagle puppy can be a rewarding experience, but it can also be a lot of work. A training pen gives your beagle a safe and secure "den" to rest in when you can't supervise it. It's also an ideal place to begin potty training your puppy since it will be reluctant to soil the place where it eats and sleeps. You can easily build a training pen that can be used and transported both inside and out.
Instructions
1. Lay out a roll of woven wire. The wire should be 20 feet long by 3 feet wide. If your wire is larger than this, cut it to the necessary size with wire cutters.
2. Beginning on one end, mark off every 5 feet on the wire with a writing utensil. You should end up with four equal pieces that are 3 feet tall by 5 feet wide.
3. Shape the pen. You can either bend the woven wire with your gloved hands to create the pen's corners or use wire cutters to cut each of the four 3 feet by 5 feet pieces apart. These four pieces will be the four walls of the pen. Solder each of the pieces together with a soldering iron. Cut another piece of 5 feet by 5 feet woven wire and solder it to the bottom of the pen; this will be the pen's floor.
4. Place a sheet of 4.5 feet by 4.5 feet plywood at the bottom of the pen. Secure it down into the cage's edges and corners. The plywood will protect the beagle's soft padded feet from the wire.
5. Place a small box filled with puppy litter (or turf, available at pet stores) in a corner for a potty training area. Clean it at least once a day.
6. Put newspaper, straw, old towels or other bedding material on top of the plywood floor to ensure a comfortable sleeping place for the beagle. Place food, water and some chew toys in the training pen. Place the beagle in the pen to begin potty training and to teach it to eat and sleep at specific times.
