Dogs do not enjoy flies in their kennels any more than people want to be irritated by them.
Summer days are warm and beautiful, but the insects thrive at the same time. Flies are an irritation, carry germs, and are not a pleasant insect to have around. Getting rid of flies is better for the health of dogs in kennels and allows them to relax without constant irritation. Biting flies may cause sores on the ears and nose, placing the dog at risk of infection. Cleaning the kennel every day helps most, while providing a more pleasant environment for your dog.
Instructions
1. A kennel of any size benefits from regular cleaning and to stop flies.
Remove the dog, food and any furnishings from the kennel and clean thoroughly using a bleach solution of 1/3 cup of bleach to 1 gallon of water. Use a broom to scrub concrete, rinse thoroughly using a hose, and allow the area to dry. Clean any kennel furnishings and allow them to dry. Keep feces cleaned up daily.
2. Sprinkle food-grade diatomaceous earth on moist areas to dry them out and prevent pest breeding.
3. Marigolds are commonly used as insect repellents.
Plant marigolds, basil or mint around the outside of the kennel areas for a natural fly repellent. These plants, known for their insect repellent qualities, are often used around vegetable gardens for the same reason.
4. Canning jars are used for homemade flytraps.
Place flytraps, homemade or store-bought, in areas a short distance from the kennel. Make traps at home using quart-sized canning jars. Place an inch of meat or fruit inside the jar. Make a couple of holes in the lid large enough for the flies to enter and tighten the lid on the jar.
5. Air movement is not an attractive environment for flies.
Run fans if possible as air movement deters flies. Keeping kennel areas uncluttered and open to breezes is good for air movement, but on breeze-less days, fans are a good option. Follow all manufacturer's recommendations and safety advice.
