A veterinary technician is a trained professional who assists veterinarians. You must attend attend college to become a licensed vet tech. There are a couple of national programs providing scholarship assistance to vet tech students throughout the United States. In addition, many state organizations and community colleges offer scholarship aid to students pursuing training in veterinary technology.
Oxbow Animal Health
Oxbow Animal Health offers financial aid to vet tech students each year through the Veterinary Technology Exotic Animal Interest Scholarship. This scholarship is limited to future vet techs who wish to work with exotic animals. Two scholarships valued at $500 are awarded each year. To apply, you must submit a resume, one letter of reference, a transcript and an essay of 300 to 500 words. The annual deadline for application is March 9. Electronic applications may be downloaded from the Oxbow Animal Health website.
The American Kennel Club and NAVTA
The American Kennel Club and the National Association of Veterinary Technicians in America (NAVTA) offer joint scholarships of between $1,000 and $2,000 annually. To be eligible, an applicant must be a member of the NAVTA or a student chapter of the NAVTA, and must be pursuing training as a veterinary technician on a full-time basis. State Organizations
Many states have organizations for vet techs that provide scholarship support to students in the field. For example, the Michigan Association of Veterinary Technicians offers the Ann Wortinger Nutritional Scholarship Award each year in the amount of $250. Veterinary technology students in Texas may be eligible for support through the Texas Association of Registered Veterinary Technicians Scholarship Program.
School-Specific Scholarships
Many schools that provide training to future veterinary technicians also offer scholarships limited specifically to veterinary technology students. For example, Metropolitan Community College in Kansas City, Mo., offers several scholarships to vet techs in training, including the Auriel Clegg Vet Tech Scholarship and the Animal Medical Center Scholarship. Students attending Jefferson State Community College in Alabama can apply for nine scholarship programs offered specifically to vet tech students.
