Many dog owners contain their dogs with chains.
For some dog owners, the only option to take their dog outside is to use a chain. Large, strong dogs can snap a tether if they pull enough. The plastic on the tether can also crack, exposing sharp wires that can cut the dog. A chain offers a long-lasting solution. Choose a chain that is strong, but not heavy. A heavy chain pulls on the dog's neck, causing discomfort. Chains can also rip up grass, so place the chain in an area clear of plants.
Instructions
1. Insert the stake into the ground. If it is a corkscrew-style stake, insert the tip into the dirt. Twist the top like you would a corkscrew until only the loop on the stake is above ground.
2. Clip a chain to the loop on the stake.
3. Put a secure collar on the dog. The collar needs a metal, not plastic, ring on it to attach the chain.
4. Take the dog outside by holding the collar or using a leash. Do not tug on the dog's collar.
5. Clip the free end of the chain to the ring on the dog's collar.
6. Leave the dog outside for 10 to 20 minutes. Go back out to the dog, remove the chain from the collar and escort the dog inside.
