Punish Your Pet With Good Results

Discipline your dog by not giving it attention.

That lovable bundle of fur might be your best and goofiest friend, but your dog also needs to know that you are the alpha in your pack. When dog owners let negative behaviors go unaddressed or uncorrected, their canines believe that they can get away with the actions, which leads to a disobedient dog. Therefore, it is important for you to discipline your dog in a way that leads to positive results and does not cause your dog to behave aggressively.

Instructions

1. Withhold treats when your dog does something it shouldn't. Treats are a positive reward that your dog must earn through good behaviors and obedience.

2. Avoid giving your dog physical affection after it does something bad. Petting is like a massage that your dog enjoys and associates with positive reinforcement. If you pet your dog after it disobeys you, you are communicating to your dog that it's okay to act out of line.

3. Use an aversion tactic of your choice, one that does not hurt or scare your dog. Some dog owners use spray bottles to spray a spritz of water at the dog whenever it jumps onto the kitchen counter or the table. After a few times, your dog will decide that it doesn't like getting sprayed, so it won't jump up on the counter anymore.

4. Ignore your dog to punish it. Your dog wants your attention, and by ignoring your dog you are conveying that it can only earn your attention when it is behaving well. To ignore your dog, don't look at it, make eye contact or talk to it for a few minutes, no matter how hard your dog tries to get you to pay attention.

5. Correct the dog's behavior as you witness it doing something bad. You might use a command word such as "No" in a stern voice, or redirect your dog by gently guiding it by its collar into the sitting position.

6. Send your dog to timeout as a means of punishment. Put your dog into its crate or kennel where it can't play with toys or get attention for a few minutes.
