German Restaurants In West Virginia

West Virginia is home to a surprising variety of German restaurants.

West Virginia is home to a variety of German, German-American and Swiss-German restaurants. Each restaurant offers a different atmosphere, and different tastes to tempt the palate, from typical German dishes like sauerkraut and German potato salad, to more adventurous offerings. Add this to my Recipe Box.

Bavarian Inn

West Virginia's Bavarian Inn is located in a hotel overlooking the Potomac River Bend. The hotel features state rooms filled with antiques, with optional gas fireplaces and whirlpool baths. In 2006, Chef Wolfgang Vomend, whose career began in Germany, joined the Bavarian Inn's team to help keep the German restaurant open 365 days a year for breakfast, lunch and dinner.

Menu items include Schwarzwaelder Kaese Spaetzle (German noodles, sauteed black forest ham, gruyere cheese and asparagus), and Jaeger Schnitzel (veal steak with a wild mushroom sherry sauce, red cabbage and spaetzle). The Bavarian Inn also features a private dining area and patio, and hosts many weddings.

North End Tower & Brewery

The North End Tower and Brewery serves German-American cuisine, and has been under the management of the same owners for more than 30 years. In 1997, the restaurant expanded to add a microbrewery, which has won many statewide competitions. North End Tower and Brewery provides a friendly, casual atmosphere, along with classic German-American dishes like German bologna and potato salad. The restaurant is also home to the NET burger, a favorite among locals.

The Hutte

The town of Helvetia is home to The Hutte, a Swiss-German restaurant. The Hutte resembles a Swiss home, with decor comprising authentic Swiss belongings from the area's original settlers. A wood stove completes the cozy atmosphere. Traditional German dishes on the menu include sauerbraten and bratwurst. The Hutte's signature dish is a sausage sandwich with sweet kraut, a side of apple sauce, and Helvetia cheese soup.
