How Often Should a Kennel Be Cleaned?
If your dog has vomited or otherwise soiled his kennel, you'll obviously want to clean it right away. Otherwise, how often you clean your dog kennel is a matter of personal tolerance. At an absolute minimum, you should clean his kennel once a year to scrub away any accumulated dirt and other waste.
What Cleaning Products Are Safe to Use?
Avoid harsh chemical cleaners that may be harmful to your dog. Common soap products, such as dish-washing liquid or shampoo, are safe for your pet, just be sure to rinse thoroughly so your pet does not ingest any soap. If you wish to sterilize your dog kennel, look for a weak bleach solution marketed as safe for humans or pets.
Preparation
Pick an outdoor spot to clean your dog's kennel, and set out the following materials: a scrub brush, an old toothbrush, a towel or paper towels, a small bowl, and a bucket of hot, soapy water. You may also wish to include a weak bleach solution to sterilize the kennel after cleaning. Disassemble the kennel and put any screws or loose pieces in your bowl.
Cleaning
Before you start on the kennel, toss any bedding in your washer. Use the hot water setting and one half cup of bleach to kill any parasites that may inhabit the bedding.
Dip your scrub brush in the soapy water and start scrubbing the dog kennel. Make sure you clean all interior and exterior surfaces. Don't forget to scrub down the door and use the old toothbrush for crevices, screw holes and the screws, if needed. Rinse the soap residue off. If you wish to sterilize your dog kennel, spray with the bleach solution and rinse again with clean water. Dry and reassemble the kennel.
