Write a Business Plan for a Doggy Daycare
As our pets become more and more like members of our family, doggy daycares are springing up all over the country where dogs can exercise, socialize and receive love and affection while their owners are away from home. Starting a doggy daycare requires a solid business plan to get started as well as a background in dog care or canine behavioral training.
Instructions
1. Make a list of the things you want to offer and accomplish with your doggy daycare. This should include the days and hours you will be open; the types and sizes of dogs you will consider; if you will offer meals, toys, walks, and services including breath freshening or bathing; and any other aspect of the daily functioning of the doggy daycare.
2. Research the market. This should include visits and written notes about other doggy daycares in your area. If you do not have competition in your area, research the doggy daycares in an area with the same demographics (populations and their pet population, average income and median age) as your area.
3. Talk with a veterinarian about the food, kennels, behavioral tools and toys you should offer. They will know what is universal for many breeds, ages and temperaments of dogs. It is also a good idea to establish a relationship with them so you have an emergency contact in the event of an injury or illness while in your care.
4. Price out the equipment and supplies. Go to your local pet store and price out the dog food, kennels, toys, and other supplies you need. On average, kennels can cost between $100 and $200 depending on the size and style of kennel. Speak with the store manager about the business account options or discounts they may offer. Also, ask if there is a place to advertise inside their business, such as a community bulletin board or newsletter.
5. Seek business assistance in the form of software or consulting. If you have the money to spend on a professional business plan writer, spend it. If you do not, there are many programs, books and companies offering information to help you build the business plan yourself. One such company, BusinessPlans.com, offers business plans for doggy daycares as a template in their software, which typically runs about $100.
