Building an outside dog kennel can be good for both dog and owner. An outside kennel can allow a dog to enjoy the out-of-doors while you are gone for the day and you know the dog is safe. It is not advisable to keep a dog locked in an outdoor kennel exclusively. Dogs are social animals and need daily interaction with their owners. Kennels can range from simple to complex in design. The important factors to keep in mind are protecting the dog from the elements, ensuring access to food and water, and providing space to exercise.
Instructions
1. Determine the size of kennel you need. This is based on both the size of your dog and available space. The kennel should be tall enough for your dog to stand on its hind legs and have clearance for its head. It should be long and wide enough for your dog to walk around without bumping against the kennel sides or the dog shelter. The bigger your dog, the bigger your kennel overall will be.
2. Use your available space to determine the location of the kennel. Keep in mind that building on to the side of a garage or shed will reduce the cost of kennel materials and create additional protection from the elements.
3. Measure your selected space in feet. Purchase enough fence to surround the area. Keep in mind, kennels that will house smaller dogs can be built of chicken wire or other thinner fencing, which usually is cheaper than chain-link fence.
4. Place fence posts 6 to 8 feet apart if your kennel is longer or wider than 8 by 8 feet. Dig a trench for your fencing, 12 to 18 inches deep all the way around the perimeter. By burying the fence, the chance of your dog digging out or other animals digging in is reduced.
5. Roll out and secure your fence to the posts. Fill in the trench around your fencing, pack it tightly.
6. Place an enclosed shelter in one corner of the dog kennel. Be sure it has a big enough opening for your dog to fit. Place a pile of straw in the shelter. Straw is more sanitary than old blankets or rugs. Place food and water dishes inside of the kennel.
