Building a roof over a kennel area provides shade and shelter for the dog. By reducing the weather's impact on the dog's existence the animal's comfort level is increased. Construct of the roof requires setting posts and constructing a roof. Builders will need standard carpentry skills as well as hand and power tools for this project.
Instructions
1. Lay out the placement of the supporting posts for the kennel roof. This project will require four posts, in a 10-foot square pattern Use 4-by-4-inch posts, 10 feet long, set at least 3 feet into the ground. Use a level to position the posts vertically straight. Set the posts in concrete or tamp dirt around the posts. Cut the posts off, using a small chainsaw or reciprocating saw, at 6 feet above grade level.
2. Fasten a 10-foot 2- by-6-inch board around the perimeter of the posts at the top. Use four 16-common nails for each board at each post. Place rafters centered at 2-foot intervals. A 4-inch to 12-inch pitch (the roof slopes 4 inches for each foot of width from the ridge of the roof) would require a rafter 5 feet 4 inches to create a ridge 20 inches above the plain created by the tops of the posts. Cut the tops of the rafters at an angle so the rafter segments fit together. Nail plywood braces to each side of the joint at the top of the rafter.
3. Cover the roof with plywood or oriented strand board nailed in place with 8-penny nails. Shingle the roof with the type of shingle desired to match the house or other outbuildings in the yard.
