1. Find a place your dog considers safe. Pay attention to where she runs to during a storm. This may be the bathtub or another part of the house. Use this location as your base shelter.
2. Spray a flower smell that calms your dog. Ask your local animal shop owner or veterinarian for specifics. Experiment with different smells until you find one that calms your dog. Spray it in the shelter during the storm.
3. Confine your dog using a crate or blanket. Close spaces help some dogs feel more secure, especially if he is crate-trained.
4. Stay with your dog, in the shelter, and distract her if possible. Pet her while she lays in the shelter or play a game that keeps her occupied. Results vary depending upon the dog. Some distraction tactics work; others don't.
