Small dogs don't need large fences.
Electronic dog fences, or containment systems, provide a way to keep dogs inside a set perimeter without a physical barricade. They work by giving the dog a small shock if it tries to leave the designated zone. To install an electronic fence, you typically have to dig a trench and lay wire underground to enclose the desired area. However, some modern systems operate wirelessly and require no digging. If you have a small dog, choose a system with low correction settings, taking the dog's size into account.
Petsafe
Petsafe makes a number of top-selling electronic dog fences, including the PIF-300 Wireless Pet Containment System and the SportDog In-Ground Fence System. The company also caters specifically to small dogs with its Little Dog Deluxe Comfort Fence model. This fence features five different correction levels and automatically bumps up the power if the dog does not respond to, or lingers in, the correction zone. The receiver, which is incorporated into a waterproof, comfortable collar, weighs only 1.1 ounces.
Perimeter Technologies
Perimeter Technologies offers three general electronic fence models: Basic, Ultra and Deluxe. The Ultra model is most suitable for a small dog because it provides a broader range of adjustable correction levels. Perimeter Technology systems feature rubber-like soft contacts on the inside of the collars/receivers.
Dogtra
The Dogtra EF-300 Gold is a good choice for people with multiple dogs of various sizes. You can adjust the correction levels individually in each collar, meaning a small dog's collar can be set at a low level, while a bigger dog's collar can be set at higher. Also included in the EF-300's five correction levels is a vibration setting, which works for extra-small dogs and puppies.
