Choosing a bulldog puppy can be a daunting task. Talk to reputable breeders and do thorough research on the bulldog's history, temperament and characteristics to gauge if this dog is right for you and your family. A breeder will provide a plethora of information that will help you through the process of choosing your canine friend. Bulldogs are large dogs that can grow to be 50 lbs. and can live up 12 years. A bulldog puppy, while cute, shouldn't be chosen only on the basis of how adorable it is.
Instructions
1. Observe the puppy. A bulldog puppy should have a smooth coat, excess skin, a large nose, open nostrils and clear eyes. Be aware that the bulldog's trademark "rose" ears will not be fully developed and erect until the puppy reaches 8 weeks of age.
2. Feel the body of the puppy. Make sure you select a well-fed dog without a distended stomach, or a stomach that has protrusions. This is an indication of a possible worm infection.
3. Check the temperament of the puppy. Choose a puppy that is friendly. A puppy should be curious and approach you when you are near. A dog that cowers away may have future behavior problems.
4. Choosing the sex of the puppy is usually personal preference, but male bulldogs tend to be more affectionate than the females. Take this into consideration when deciding.
5. Listen to the puppy breathing. Bulldogs are prone to a condition called stenotic nares, where the nasal openings are pinched or partially closed. There should not be a noticeable noise coming from the puppy when it breaths.
