Build An Outside Dog Kennel

Build an Outdoor Dog Kennel

Dogs provide protection, companionship and enjoyment for many pet owners, although housing these furry friends can sometimes be difficult. An outdoor dog kennel is a good option for keeping your pet contained, and while building one can be a challenge, it is beneficial for both dog and owner alike.

Instructions

1. Determine where you want to place your kennel. A relatively flat, open space works best to prevent puddles. A small kennel with two 6-by-6 foot stalls works well for most pets, so make sure your chosen area has adequate space.

2. Designate where you will place your posts. Your kennel will be a 12 feet long by 6 feet wide, with posts at all four corners and one in the middle at each end to attach your dividing fence to.

3. Dig your post holes approximately 1 foot deep. Mix your concrete and pour a small amount into your holes before placing your posts. Setting your posts in concrete gives your pen added stability and will prevent shifting due to weather or stress. Let your concrete cure for at least 7 days before stringing your fence.

4. Attach your section of fence to your first fence post, and pull it around to the next corner post. Use the fence puller to stretch it tight, and secure it with three fence clamps. Make sure the clamps are bolted on securely to keep your fence from coming loose.

5. Trim a 6-foot section from your chain link, and clamp it between your two middle posts. This will serve as the divider between your two kennel sections.

6. Continue to string your fence around the outside of the pen, stretching and clamping it at every post. Keep your fencing taut, and trim off any excess chain link with your bolt cutters once you've completed the outer barrier of your kennel.

7. Set a gate panel at the left-side opening of your kennel, and secure it to the posts. Make sure that you place it so the gate opens outwards to simplify getting your dogs in and out. Repeat this process on the right panel to complete your kennel frame.

8. Spread a thin layer of gravel in the bottom of your kennel. The gravel will provide your dogs a good footing and will allow moisture to drain to keep your new kennel as clean as possible.
