Open Kennel Companies

Kennels care for dogs while their owners are away

Opening a kennel business takes a love for dogs of all ages. Kennels work with various breeds of dogs, have the patience to deal with multiple animals barking at the same time and do not mind cleaning up feces.

Instructions

1. Begin with a small kennel. Businesses can grow as profits increase, but opening a kennel business on a smaller scale allows owners to learn operate this type of company properly. Begin by providing boarding for just two dogs at a time. After profits start coming in, start to house more dogs. If providing boarding for two dogs, consider taking care of them at home to save on costs. Be sure to purchase animal cages, feeding bowls, water dishes, animal toys, dog bones, food for dogs of all ages and special treats to reward the animals being housed.

2. Write contracts for clients. Remember that housing the pet of a dog lover is nothing to take lightly. Purchase insurance to cover the business in the unfortunate event that something happens to one of the pets being housed. Have a reputable attorney create a release form for the business that allows the transportation of any sick animals under your care to a veterinarian.

3. Offer to take care of pets who you already know. Looking after the dogs of friends, co-workers and family members gives the chance to see how it would feel to run a small kennel business. Ask friends if you could watch their dogs in exchange for their testimonial that will be placed on advertising materials to attract clients.

4. Drive customers to the business. Travel to any doggy parks in the area, neighborhood playgrounds or pet store bulletin boards and hand out or post fliers at these locations. Research the competition in the area and decide to offer rates that are lower to build up a sizable client base. Include contact information, testimonials and low prices on fliers to attract business.
