Seafood In Filled Ponds In Southern Illinois

Trout are often stocked in fishing ponds.

Illinois is a haven for anglers; the state has 91,150 lakes and ponds totaling 263,900 acres. The Illinois Division of Fisheries manages four fish hatcheries, which produce more than 50 million fish each year for stocking the state's fishing areas. Species you may find in ponds include bass, bluegill, catfish, crappie, brown trout and rainbow trout.

Instructions

1. Obtain a map of the pond in Southern Illinois to know the bottom contour, so you can find structures that may lure fish. Fish are attracted to structures such as road beds, weeds, creek channels, grass, rocks, brush and timber.

2. Research what types of fish species you may find. The Illinois Department of Natural Resources stocks rainbow trout in the upper pond at Washington Park in Springfield. Boston, Marlow and Wilson ponds in Stephen A. Forbes State Recreation Area in Kinmundy are stocked with largemouth bass. Stocking occurs annually.

3. Look for fish in the deepest water. Ponds are generally shallow and often harbor fish in areas with greater depths because these spots provide a protective place for the fish.

4. Use light tackle and cast your lines at sunrise and sunset, when fish are more active and less spooked by pond visitors.

5. Use a variety of lures and baits, including nightcrawlers, live minnows and worms. Use minnows and other small bait fish for bass and crappie. Small, imitation crawfish, crickets and minnows work well for bass fishing in ponds. If the Illinois pond you are fishing in has larger catfish or bass, use heavier tackle.
