The Marquis de Lafayette presented Basset hounds, known for their extraordinary sense of smell, to President George Washington to use as hunt dogs just after the Revolutionary War. According to the American Kennel Club, the Basset "was originally developed in France as a trailer of small game that hunters could follow on foot." Bassets are known as great family dogs for their gentle disposition, but will need training to override their strong hunting instinct. Having a well-behaved dog requires that owners begin basic training--sitting and laying down upon command--once their puppy is comfortable in its new home.
Instructions
1. Hold a treat directly over your Basset puppy's head so that he is forced to raise his nose and sit back on his haunches.
2. Move the treat down in front of his muzzle and hold it there until he focuses on your hand. Because Bassets are scent hounds, your puppy may try to grab the treat--don't let him.
3. Lower your hand with the treat slowly to the ground in front of the puppy, saying the word "down." If your little Basset's nose doesn't follow the treat down, try this step again until his head is on the ground and his body follows
4. Give your puppy the treat as soon as he is lying down and praise him with your voice. The Basset hound's sweet nature requires that owners train with gentle consistency.
5. Repeat these steps several times a day. You will need to gradually reduce the amount of time you use the treat so that your Basset eventually goes down using just the vocal command and your hand signal.
