Purchase your Bullboxer from a reliable breeder.
Breeding a Boxer with an American Pitbull Terrier will result in a litter of mixed breed puppies. These dogs are usually called Pitboxers, but also referred to as Bullboxer Pits, American Bullboxers and Pitoxers. Such puppies may not have acquired the desired characteristics from each dog breed and there may also be a variety of different personalities and physical traits in a single litter. To get an idea of the dog's temperament, research both breeds of dog that contribute to the mixed breed.
Physical
The Pitboxer will generally grow to the size of a Pit Bull, which is smaller than the Boxer. This is a short-haired dog, although it will require occasional grooming as would a Pit Bull or Boxer. This dog can have a wide variety of colorations and markings. The Pitboxer is likely to have a sturdy and muscular body type, large head and smallish ears like that of the Boxer and Pit Bull breeds.
Temperament
Both the Boxer and American Pit Bull are known to be social dogs that often bond closely with their families. These two breeds also have a protective instinct, which means that they may be unfriendly toward strangers who enter the family home. The American Kennel Club (akc.org) describes the Boxer as an affectionate breed that is often extremely playful. Like the Pit Bull Terrier, the Boxer is often patient with children. However, it is highly recommended that these dogs not be left alone with children outside of the family. Both the Boxer and the American Pit Bull have a history of dog fighting and it is therefore vital that the Pitboxer be kept on a leash in the company of other dogs.
Trainability
An extremely intelligent and trainable dog, the Pitboxer will learn commands quickly. As both the Boxer and the Pit Bull have a naturally protective instinct and can be dog aggressive, it is vital that the Pitboxer puppies are socialized thoroughly from a young age to reduce the risk of becoming aggressive as they mature. Socialization includes introducing the puppy to as many new people, dogs and places as possible. It is also important for these dogs to view their owner as the pack leader. To enforce this, the owner must begin training the puppy from a young age and avoid letting the dog jump on furniture.
Health
The Pitboxer is generally a healthy dog, although it can be prone to weight gain if it is overfed. Both the Boxer and the American Pit Bull are extremely active breeds that require a long walk on a daily basis to drain their excess energy. Walking the dog can also encourage it to see the owner as the pack leader. The dog should always walk slightly behind the owner and be the last to enter the house at the end of the walk. This dog may be vulnerable to hip dysplasia, heart disease and grass allergies, much like the American Pit Bull breed.
