Salt Lake City Capitol Building
The Gateway is a large, open-air shopping mall, entertainment venue and dining area in the center of Salt Lake City, Utah. The Grand Hall, which is now used for corporate events, wedding receptions or as the grand entrance to the Gateway, was at one time the city's Union Pacific Depot (originally known as Union Station). Union Station operated as a train station for passengers coming from Los Angeles, San Pedro and Oregon and was open from 1909 to the 1970s. Restoration of the Grand Hall took place in recent years and now is a reminder of Utah's railroad history. Visitors to the area will find a number of comfortable hotel accommodations nearby.

The Radisson Hotel Salt Lake City Downtown is located half a mile from the Grand Hall, next to the Salt Palace Convention Center and two blocks from the Capitol Theater. Many of the 381 guest rooms offer views of the Wasatch Mountains. Valet parking, self-parking and outdoor parking are offered for a nominal fee. Amenities include a fitness center, express laundry, 15,000 square feet of banquet and meeting space and on-site dining at a modern American restaurant called the Copper Canyon Grill House and Tavern. If you prefer to dine in your room, room service is another option. There is no smoking anywhere in the hotel. Check-in begins at 3 p.m. and check-out is at noon.

Howard Johnson Express Inn
The Howard Johnson Express Inn, located half a mile from the Grand Hall at the Gateway, is a great option for a lower-cost hotel in walking distance to downtown, the Delta Center and the Genealogical Library. Although the decor is a bit dated, the hotel makes up for it in convenience. It offers a free airport shuttle, free parking, complimentary breakfast in a newly tiled breakfast area, free high-speed Internet, a gym and fitness center, a large, outdoor heated pool and is pet friendly. This inn can accommodate one to six persons per room with a variety of king- and queen-sized beds. All rooms have a 25-inch cable television.

Hyatt Place
Hyatt Place, located adjacent to the Gateway Mall and across from the Energy Solutions Arena (venue for big concerts and NBA games), is a modern hotel with casual surroundings designed for business travelers, commuters and families. It offers high-tech conveniences such as ordering food for room service from a touch-screen menu with a swipe of your room key, check-in kiosks, free high-speed Wi-Fi and a 42-inch high-definition flat-screen television in each guest room with laptop compatibility. Although the hotel does not allow pets, the concierge will help you to find a kennel in the area. On-site parking is available for $10 (as of 2010) and breakfast is complimentary.
