Grow Veal Calves

Veal calves are a by-product of the dairy industry. Dairy cows must be pregnant annually in order to give milk. Dairy cows live for five to seven years before their milk production decreases. When production decreases, the cow is no longer valuable to the dairy, so she is sold to the slaughterhouse. Farmers developed the modern veal industry in order to make money from the male calves born to dairy cows. Female calves become part of the dairy herd. The male calf is useless to the dairy farmer unless he becomes a veal calf. Veal calves live four to five months before they are sold to slaughter.

Instructions

1. Remove the male calf from his mother immediately after birth. Calves may drink the first milk of the mother, the colostrum. The mother must go back to producing milk for human consumption. Female calves are also separated from their mothers and fed special formula. Most female calves will become dairy cows.

2. Place a collar with a chain around the calf's neck. Attach the chain to the crate the calf will live in. The crate should have partitions up to the shoulder. The chain should be long enough so the calf can turn around and lie down. Remove feces once a day.

3. Feed the calf formula that is low in iron in order to keep the muscles white. Red pigment in muscles results from iron intake. The American consumer prefers white, milk-fed veal meat.

4. Continue feeding the formula and allowing the calf to live in the crate until the calf is between four and five months old. At that time, the calf should weigh about 400 pounds.

5. Sell the calf to the slaughterhouse. The calf will be killed, and his white meat will be packaged for sale to markets, restaurants and stores.
