Get The Dog Aficionado

Train your pit bull to be fit and healthy with proper conditioning techniques.


The name "pit bull" often conjures up images of aggressive dogs. Pit bulls are not born aggressive; they are often loving dogs that are extremely loyal and friendly. They are strong animals that enjoy exercising and burning energy. Strength training allows the dog to be at peak physical condition while expending extra energy in a healthy and productive way.


Instructions


1. Maintain food intake to one to two cups per day, depending on size and weight. Divide the food into two or three separate feeding times so the dog does not eat all its food at once. Limit treats to every other day.


2. Build the dog's stamina by taking walks, running or playing catch at least twice per day.


3. Use a weight pull harness to begin the conditioning process. The harness has a rope or chain attached. Start by placing 3- to 5-pound weights on the harness and allow the dog to walk a short distance, dragging the weight behind it.


4. Add another 1 to 2 pounds of weight once the dog easily carries the weight for a long distance. Always begin with short distances when adding more weight and build up to longer distances.


5. Increase the distance, not the weight, to build stamina and muscle. Adding more weight may cause injury to the dog. Strength train every other day.


6. Purchase or build your own spring pole to build the dog's stamina and strength through resistance. A simple spring pole consists of a heavy-duty spring, chain, carabineers and a toy. The dog plays with the toy while the spring provides resistance, similar to the way humans use elastic bands to work out and build strength.


7. Attach the spring pole to a low, solid surface, such as a pole or thick tree branch. The spring should be low enough so the dog's back legs are on the ground. Secure a toy to the other end and let the dog pull on the toy. Rope or strong rubber toys work well. Allow the dog to use the spring pole for 20 to 30 minutes a day.
