Price Of Air travel Travel For Felines

Your cat carrier must meet the airline's guidelines.

In addition to plane fare, you may need to purchase a kennel suitable for airplanes before you fly with your cat. You will probably also have to obtain a clean bill of health from a veterinarian. With this in mind, consider that the total cost of air travel for a cat can range from about $100 for a one-way trip to approximately $500 for a round-trip flight, including a carrier and vet visit.

Types

To bring your cat into the cabin of the plane with you, where it must be placed under the seat in front of you, costs approximately $100 to $125 each way in 2010. The cost to travel with a cat as checked baggage, where it sits in a temperature-controlled area inside the plane, ranges from $150 to $200 for a one-way trip. Consult your airline to receive specific pricing information and requirements for airline travel with pets.

Considerations

With either method, your cat has to travel in a kennel that meets the airline's material and dimensions guidelines. Prices for cat kennels or carriers generally start at about $30.

Warning

Some airlines or destinations may require a health certificate from a licensed veterinarian dated between 10 and 30 days prior to travel proving that your cat is up-to-date on vaccines. A veterinary office visit generally costs between $40 and $60, but if your cat requires vaccinations, the total vet bill can be twice that amount.
