Pit bulls are rumored to be aggressive, vicious and terrifying. Your pit bull's behaviors depend on the environment you create and the training you provide. This breed is highly intelligent, eager to please their owners and easy to train. Remain patient and put forth the effort and your reward will be a loving, obedient pit bull.
Consistency
Stay consistent with your rules and commands. Do not allow the pit bull onto the sofa one day and then yell when it jumps on the sofa another. Consistency is the best way to get reliable results from your pit bull; it will ensure success and obedience. If you change your expectations your pit bull will never know what is right and what is wrong.
Exercise
Pit bulls require a great deal of exercise. Try training sessions after a 30-minute walk to ensure success. When your pit bull is tired, it will be more obedient and less distracted. Proper exercise also limits destructive behaviors throughout the day.
Yelling
Do not yell at your pit bull. Yelling does not teach that the behavior was unfavorable. It will teach it the environment is hostile. Talk in a calm voice and remain assertive. Yelling is a common response for when someone finds a mess created by their pit bull. If you find shredded tennis shoes from three hours earlier and begin yelling, the pit bull will have no idea why you are yelling. Only correct a behavior when you witness the behavior taking place, and do so in an assertive voice.
Create a Bond
Your pit bull is more likely to respond to your wishes if you have a bond. Share playtime with your pit bull. Play fetch, exercise it on an obstacle course, go for walks or go swimming. When your pit bull is behaving, reward him with love and affection. He will learn to care for you as an owner and succumb to your commands.
Be the Pack Leader
Pit bulls can dominate their owners if they believe they run the pack. When you bring a new pit bull home, exert your dominance in an effective way to avoid aggressive behaviors later in his life. An easy way to exert your leadership is during feeding times. Feed your pit bull the recommended number of times a day, but only put the bowl down after it sits for you. This will teach it that you own the food and you are the boss.
Do not let your pit bull get the attention it wants, make it earn it. If he comes to you wanting to be patted on the head or wants to sit on your lap walk away and ignore it. Have the dog sit before you give him the attention it wants. This will reinforce who is in charge.
Do not let your pit bull get up on a surface that is higher than where you are. Height will create a sense of dominance and puts you in a weaker position.
