Suggestions For Dog Runs

A dog run can be used as a place for your pet to exercise, as an area for him to relieve himself or as a kennel. Knowing that you have a place where your dog is safe and sound when you are otherwise occupied is one of the great benefits of building a dog run. What type of dog run you build is dependent on the size of your property, your resources and the breed or your dog.

Size

If you are building a run so your dog can exercise, it needs to have a length of no less than 20 feet for small dogs, and 40 feet for medium and larger dogs. Ideally, the run should be at least five feet wide.

Fencing

Make your dog run out of a variety of fencing materials. A dog run can be made with chain link and/or mesh fencing of various sizes. Chain link is not a good choice for a dog or other animal that is prone to chewing. It is not a strong as it appears to be and dogs have been known to chew through it, often injuring themselves in the process. Depending on the wildlife in your area, you may want to choose a very small mesh to prevent other animals like snakes from getting into your run. To avoid animals digging out or into your run, sink the mesh or chain link of your fence at least a foot into the ground. To prevent all animals from jumping in or out of your run, put a cover on it.

Safety Concerns

Make sure your run is safe for your pet. If your dog run is not attached via a doggy door to your home, you must make sure that adequate shelter is provided for your dog when it's in the run. Your pet must have shelter from the elements, a doghouse or similar protection from other animals, and a supply of fresh water. Several different types of waterers can be attached to your garden hose to ensure a continuous supply of water.

Building Choices

Build the dog run with your lifestyle in mind. An attached run has the advantage of allowing your dog to go outside via a dog door to relieve himself. If you decide to attach your run, think carefully about where you put it. A dog run that also encloses your patio will mean that your entertaining options outside are limited. Consider attaching the dog run through a spare bedroom or office. Your run should have a human-sized door in the exterior to allow you to enter for poop scooping and landscaping. Consider a double gate, like those in a dog park, to prevent your pets slipping by you when you enter and exit.
