A dog that climbs may need a cover on its pen.
Dogs that are allowed to run free often get into trouble or end up being hurt or killed. Chaining your dog is not a good solution for keeping it home, as chaining is cruel and inhumane, says the Humane Society of the United States. A better way to keep your dog home is to set up a dog pen made of chain-link fence. The easiest way to build such a kennel is to purchase a kit made of chain-link panels, then assemble the kit at home.
Instructions
1. Choose a location for the dog pen. It is important that the area be level and in a well-drained spot so that your dog doesn't end up sitting in mud. You can make a level area and cover it with pea gravel or wood shavings. You can also place the pen on concrete. Be sure that the area will have protection from sun and rain.
2. Lay the panels on the ground in the area where the pen will be assembled. Lay them down so that all you need to do is to stand each one up and bolt it in place. Be sure you have your gate panel placed at the front of the pen.
3. Stand up the back panel and one of the side panels that attaches to it. Use two of the clamps that came with the kit to fasten these two pieces together to make the first corner of the pen. If possible, have someone help you with this step.
4. Clamp the other side panel to the back panel the same way you did the first one. Your pen will now be in a "U" shape. Attach any additional side panels (this will depend on the size of your pen, as some have two or more panels on each side while others have only one panel per side). Use two clamps for every connection, placing one high and one low on the panels.
5. Bolt the gate frame in place with the hinge pins pointing up. If the gate is to open from the right side, place the hinge pins on the left, and vice versa. Slip the gate hinges over the hinge pins to complete the assembly of the pen.
6. Attach the gate latch to the gate frame on the side opposite the hinges. Be sure the latch is installed right side up, so that it must be lifted in order to open. For extra security, you can add a clip or a chain to hold the gate closed, though most dog pen latches are nearly impossible for dogs to open.
7. Check all the way around the pen for spots where your dog might be able to squeeze or dig out. If you find any such spots, block them with large stones or bricks.
