Dog day camps help children learn about canine behavior.
The rate of dog bite injuries is highest among children. Although a child should never be blamed for a dog's aggression, there are behaviors kids can learn that might lessen their risks of getting bitten by dogs. Numerous humane societies and rescue groups offer dog camps for kids that teach children about canine behavior, benefiting both campers and rescue pets.

Shelter dogs get special attention from campers.
The San Francisco SPCA views participation in its summer animal camps as a win-win situation. While kids get to learn about animals, shelter dogs and cats get special attention from campers. According to its website, "Curricula combine enriching activities and experiential learning to foster children's love and understanding of animals." Each camp session costs $400, although financial aid is available for low-income families. Campers get a t-shirt and an afternoon snack.
