American pit bulls live an average of 12 years and require a lot of exercise.
American pit bull terriers have many different bloodlines within the breed. Each pit bull bloodline has its own unique characteristics. The breed in its pure form is known as a diligent working dog, competent in activities such as ratting, herding, hunting and cart pulling. To remain a member of a bloodline, the dog must be bred within the same bloodline, according to the National Dog Breeders Council of South Africa.
Pit Bull
The American pit bull terrier is thought to be a combination of older generations of dogs, according to the Dog Breed Info Center. The breed initially was developed for pit fighting purposes, with a high amount of aggression toward other dogs and animals. The breed as a whole is known for its thick, short, shiny coat, an average height between 18 and 22 inches, weighing between 22 and 110 pounds. To register a dog as a member of a bloodline with a professional organization such as the American Pit Bull Registry certain physical characteristics must be met, for example an undocked tail that tapers to a point and rounded eyes.
Characteristics
Each bloodline within the pit bull breed has a certain set of characteristics. For example, bloodlines are created to breed dogs with large heads, certain bone structures, size and color. Despite the breeding for certain characteristics, a bloodline is not defined by a certain color or size but by the ancestors of each animal bred into the bloodline. There is no royal bloodline or blue bloodline, the use of these terms is awarded by national organizations in response to the number of championships and competitions won by the dogs within a bloodline.
Bloodlines
There are a number of bloodlines within the pit bull breed, including Spike, Rocky, Yellow and Red Boy. The Hank bloodline originated from a champion known as Burtons Grand Champion Hank born to Kepharts Susie or Kepharts Tip. The Hank bloodline comes from the Eli bloodline. Other bloodlines include Bolio, named after Indian Bolio, who was a member of the Carver bloodline. The origins of the Carver bloodline lie in the Carver Kennels, which breeds American pit bulls known as all-rounders.
Registration
The bloodlines and status of the pit bull is monitored and recorded by groups including the United Kennel Club, the American Dog Breeders Association and the American Pit Bull Registry. To maintain the status as a member of a bloodline, a dog must be bred within its own bloodline.
