Use Stones For Pitbulls

Pea gravel provides dogs with a clean place to eliminate while it protects your lawn.

Pea gravel is often used as ground cover for driveways but it can also be used to create a place for your pitbull to eliminate. Pea gravel is made up of small pieces of gravel about the size of peas. It has good drainage and is easier to walk on than large pieces of gravel that have sharp edges. Placing pea gravel on the ground for your dog to eliminate on will protect your lawn from animal waste that can kill grass.

Instructions

Applying Pea Gravel

1. Mark the area you want your pitbull to eliminate. Put pea gravel in places like kennel floors, garden borders, fence borders, paths or in a large patch in the yard. This will attract your dog to the gravel and keep the dog from urinating on or digging in other areas like your lawn.

2. Apply a 2-inch layer of pea gravel. If the pea gravel is too deep, the pitbull will sink in it and have trouble walking on it. If the gravel is not deep enough, bare patches will form and the dog will lose interest in the gravel.

3. Retain the pea gravel. If you want to keep the pea gravel confined to a specific area, line the edges of the gravel with large stones or beams of wood. This will prevent the gravel from scattering or moving into the yard area when the dogs walk on it.

Cleaning and Maintaining Pea Gravel

4. Clean up dog feces on the gravel daily. Use surgical gloves or pick it up by covering your hand with a plastic bag and discarding the waste. If you don't want to touch the waste, use a rake to rake out the waste from the stones and shovel it into the garbage.

5. Wash the stones daily. Spraying the gravel with a hose will wash off any urine or remaining feces on the gravel which will then drain to the bottom of the gravel and dry up. Spraying the stones will also dilute the urine and prevent bad odors from forming.

6. Replenish lost gravel once a week. You will eventually lose gravel when raking it and picking up waste that has mixed in with the gravel. Keep a supply of pea gravel on hand and replenish by sprinkling a new layer of gravel once a week or as needed.
