As long as they are not trained to be violent, Pit Bulls can be very friendly dogs.
Pit Bull is a broad term that refers to several breeds of dog -- most notably, the American Pit Bull Terrier, the American Staffordshire Terrier and the Staffordshire Bull Terrier. These breeds are mixes of various types of Bulldogs and Terriers. The Pit Bull has become one of the most populous breeds of dog in the world, which has led to Pit Bull mixes being very common as well as diverse. Despite their reputation for aggression, Pit Bulls and Pit Bull mixes make great pets because of their affectionate, loyal and intelligent nature.

Breeding the Dogs
1. Choose the dogs. The genetic background of the dogs is very important in this selection. The most common Pit Bull mix is with a Labrador. (Labrabull) Pitweilers (Pit Bull and Rottweiler) and Bullboxers (Pitbull and Boxer) are popular as well. Also consider the age of the dogs. They reach full maturity at about 2 years old. Then look at their physical characteristics. Make sure they have the attributes of the breed you desire.
2. Take the dogs to a vet. Have them checked for parasites and infections. Ensure they are vaccinated. However, do not vaccinate the mother after she has already bred. This can cause birth defects.
3. Wait for the bitch to go into heat. After reaching full maturity, a female dog will go into heat about every 6 months. If the stud is in a nearby pen, you will see her genitals swell and discharge. The stud should react to her scent.
4. Put the dogs together about 2 to 3 days after you observe signs of the female coming into heat. Allow nature to take its course. You can leave the stud in the pen for a day or two without danger to either dog.
5. Take care of the mother. Talk to your vet about supplemental vitamins. Provide plenty of fresh water. Clean her kennel regularly, and give her fresh bedding. About three weeks before delivery, some breeders recommend giving her puppy food for the extra nutrition it provides.
6. Prepare a whelping box for the puppies. This box should be about 6 inches longer than the mother when she is lying on her side. It should have a rail so that she does not lie on the pups after they're born. Every point should be accessible. Also place several layers of newspaper and plastic one after the other at the bottom of the box. When the paper is soiled, you can remove a layer and reveal a fresh one underneath.
7. Be alert for the delivery. The gestation period for dogs is about 63 days after conception. The mother could suffer certain birthing problems. Be ready to take her to an emergency vet if necessary. When the pups are born, write down the date, total number of pups, the sex of each pup and the number of stillborn pups.
8. Take care of the pups. Keep them clean and warm. Make sure they are all getting milk. Clean the whelping box frequently. Take them to a vet at 6 weeks old.
