Develop A Dog Kennel Business

Taking care of other people's dogs can be one of the most rewarding jobs for a dog lover.

Dog kennels are gaining popularity as their owners are frequently traveling and need a trustworthy place to take care of their furry friend. Unlike doggy day cares, kennels usually keep dogs overnight and require round-the-clock supervision to make sure all the dogs are safe during their stay. If you are an avid dog lover and are business-savvy, then opening a dog kennel might be the perfect career for you to invest in.

Instructions

1. Check to see if you have sufficient funds. Make sure that you have a reliable source of income to cover at least the first six months of your business. One financial option to look into is taking out a loan, but make sure that you read the fine print and look at other options first.

2. Figure out the zoning laws, licenses and permits required for opening a dog kennel. Visit city hall and ask where you can get the necessary paperwork.

3. Find an appropriate space for your kennel. You will need to find a large space like a warehouse to house your business in. It is also ideal to have an outdoor space for the dogs to run around and get exercise in. Make sure the space also has the proper ventilation for the dogs and is weather-tight in case it rains or snows.

4. Set up your kennel. Begin small and build just a few dog pens out of some metal fencing you can get at your local hardware store. Make each pen comfortable by adding soft mats and dog beds for the dogs to sleep on. Add some dog toys and a dog water and food bowl in each pen. As you gain customers and become more comfortable taking care of dogs, you can add more dog pens.

5. Advertise locally. Put ads everywhere you can, including your local community center, church and schools. Also, contact your local veterinarians and ask if you can put your ad in their offices.

6. Determine the rate you will charge. Shop around other dog kennels in your area and charge a little lower in the beginning. As you gain more customers, you can slowly increase your prices.
