An outdoor dog kennel is a great way to give your dog lots of room to run and a space that is all theirs while keeping them happy and healthy. Building a kennel yourself is more cost-effective than buying a pre-built one and can be a fun hands-on project for kids to help with too. Here are some tips for building a dog kennel.
Instructions
1. Check zoning regulations. If you live in a suburban area, there might be zoning and building codes that limit the type and size of kennel you can build on your property. Your local city council office or housing board can provide you with all of this information before you begin your project.
2. Measure carefully. Take accurate measurements of the entire area you are enclosing for the dog run. Include space to enclose the doghouse as well. Consider how far from your house or garage the kennel will be, how much remaining yard space will remain and the distance to any neighboring property when deciding how big to make your kennel.
3. Buy quality materials. Your dog kennel must stand up to wind, rain, ice and snow, in addition to wear and tear from your dog. Invest in quality materials for an enclosure that will last the life of your dog. Buy heavy-duty fencing, preferably a type with non-toxic plastic coating to keep your dog safe from rust or sharp edges. Inspect the fencing prior to installation for any sharp corners or breakages. The latch or bolt for the door of the enclosure should be easy for you to operate but secure enough that your dog will not be able to nudge it open with its paws or nose.
4. Sink fencing well. The fencing material you use to build your enclosure and the support posts you attach the fencing to must be sunk deeply into the ground. This increases the stability of the fence, keeps any animals from getting into the enclosure and prevents your dog from being able to dig out under the fenced-in area.
5. Include a shaded and an open area. While the doghouse inside the enclosure will provide shelter from the elements, you also must create an outdoor space for your dog that is still protected from the sun. If you are building the dog run near a tree or other natural shade, this need will already be met. If not, use a lightweight but durable material to create shade but still allow air to pass through.
6. Build on high ground. The kennel will be turned into a messy mud pit after it rains or snow thaws if built at the bottom of a hill or an area of your yard where the land slopes down. Build the enclosure on higher or level ground where water will drain away from the doghouse and dog run to keep the kennel clean and dry and your dog happy.
