A stabilized decomposed granite floor will be both comfortable and durable.
Decomposed granite is usually used to add a natural look to walkways and pathways. The natural look of the granite easily blends into the surrounding nature. Another added benefit of decomposed granite is that it is comfortable for dogs to walk and lie on. The looseness of the mixture provides support and a little "give" to alleviate pressure on the dog's joints. If you are thinking about using decomposed granite for a kennel, the best option is to add an organic stabilizer to make the mixture more durable.
Instructions
1. Crush the granite until the pieces are no larger than 1/4 inch. You will need granite to be this size since smaller pieces will adhere to each other better. Also, you can purchase crushed granite if you do not have the time or the capabilities for this step.
2. Combine the crushed granite with the organic stabilizer until the mixture has a moist appearance. You have added too much stabilizer and will need to add more crushed granite if the mixture has a muddy consistency. The combination of stabilizer and crushed granite is referred to as stabilized decomposed granite.
3. Cover the bottom of the kennel with 3 inches of the stabilized decomposed granite mixture.
4. Compress the mixture with a large weight. This can be any heavy object you have on hand (e.g., a trashcan filled with water). The mixture will be very loose and will wear easily before you compress it. Using a heavy weight will compact the mixture to a degree that it will not wear or erode away but will still be comfortable for a dog.
