Exactly What Does Clavamox Treat

Clavamox, a drug manufactured by the animal health division of Pfizer Pharmaceuticals, is used in both cats and dogs to treat a variety of infections and illnesses. Clavamox is a prescription drug, and is only available under the care and direction of a licensed veterinarian.

What is Clavamox?

Clavamox is a mixture of two drugs that work to combat infection. Amoxicillin, a broad spectrum antibiotic, is mixed with Clavulanate, a drug that works to inhibit enzymes produced by the dog's body that would otherwise render the antibiotic useless.

Uses

According to the manufactuerer, Clavamox is used to treat skin and soft-tissue infections, wounds, abscesses, cellulitis and deep pyoderma, an inflammatory skin disease.

Off-label uses

Clavamox is also used to treat urinary tract infections, pneumonia and bone infections when recommended by a veterinarian.

Forms

Clavamox comes in cartons that contain 210 tablets that are 62.5 mg, 125 mg, 250 mg, and 375 mg in strength. Clavamox is also available in 15-mL bottles containing 50 mg of amoxicillin/12.5 mg of clavulanic acid per mL.

Dosage

The dosage of liquid Clavamox, as recommended by the manufacturer, is 1 mL per 10 lb of a dog's weight twice a day. Tablets are administered at 6.25 mg per lb twice a day. Treatment time varies by cause, but use of Clavamox should not exceed 30 days.
