Be A Protection Dog Trainer

This protection dog accompanies his handler

Watching a protection dog work with his handler can make a powerful impression. Training dogs to master this difficult task takes a team of dedicated professionals. At the head of that team is the protection dog trainer, a person with years of experience, education and passion under his belt.

Instructions

1. Research your options thoroughly online. Discover whether this is a field that truly interests you, for it is grueling, emotional work.

2. Work with dogs will come later; school comes first

Attend school to become a dog trainer. Certification as a pet dog trainer is the first step to any higher level certifications. Good schools include Animal Behavior College and the Triple Crown Dog Academy.

3. This trainer works with two Doberman puppies

Get a dog of your own. Ensure it is a breed that is a good fit and begin to work with him. Meticulously log all your hours spent training. Slowly branch out and work with other people's dogs, employing your new-found training skills.

4. Seek certification through the Certification Council for Professional Dog Trainers. This is the highest certification available and brings the most prestige and job opportunities.

5. This watchful canine has his eye on all around him, a mark of a well-trained protection dog

Take a specialty class from a school such as Police Dog Trainers. Gain your certification as a protection dog trainer.

6. Continue to work with dogs and gain hands-on experience. Hold classes of your own and volunteer at the humane society to log work hours.

7. Seek employment with a well-established kennel or with the local police department. Alternatively, begin a program (either breeding or working dogs) of your own.
