Harmful Dog Insurance

According to DogBiteLaw.com, over 1,000 Americans are treated each day for dog bites, and children account for more than half of those treated. At the same time, the insurance industry is trying to ban dog bites from coverage under homeowner policies. Because of this, it's important to seek separate insurance for "dangerous" dogs.

Classification

A dog can be classified as "dangerous" even if it has a mild disposition. The main determining factor is the dog's breed.

"Dangerous" Breeds

The following breeds have been labeled as "dangerous" by most states: pit bull, rottweiler, Doberman pinscher, German shepherd, Akita, chow chow, Siberian husky and Alaskan malamute.

Dangerous Dog Insurance Policies

Dangerous dog insurance policies are not only available to homeowners, but also to renters. Policies have also been developed for business owners (salvage yards, service garages, etc.) who keep a "dangerous" dog on site for security purposes.

Financial Impact

Dog bites account for over $1 billion in losses each year to policy owners.

Disclosure

If you have a dangerous dog and give it away or sell it, you must disclose to the new owner the fact that it's classified as a "dangerous" dog. It's then up to the new owner whether or not to obtain insurance.
