Jack Russell Training Tips

A Jack Russell terrier is a small dog with a smooth, white coat. These dogs have a lot of energy and can be stubborn and aggressive if not trained properly. The Jack Russell terrier is an intelligent dog and can be taught with relative ease if a few golden rules are followed.

Teach Young

Begin training your Jack Russell as soon as you receive it. Waiting to begin training with your Jack Russell makes it more difficult. Jack Russell terriers are headstrong and need obedience from the beginning. Begin training the Jack Russell by showing it that you are the leader of the household. Always walk through doors before your puppy. Never feed your dog before you eat. Make sure the puppy is challenged with play. A Jack Russell has lots of energy and intelligence, and those characteristics need to be exercised to keep them from being unpleasant around the house.

Commands and Interaction

Adopt different voices and pitches for different commands. Assigning a voice intonation to different commands keeps the Jack Russell terrier from confusing one command from another. Jack Russell terriers can be antisocial toward other animals and people so begin at an early age to introduce the dog to as many people and animals as you can. Enroll your dog into a training school at an early age, 4 to 6 months, to teach proper social skills.

Consistency

Be consistent with your Jack Russell to train the dog properly. Jack Russell terriers are smart dogs and are known for taking advantage of a situation if it suits their needs. Be consistent to keep your Jack Russell from becoming confused and use positive reinforcement such as treats to reward good behavior. Always ignore bad behavior. Never change the rewards or punishments for certain actions.
