Vet Tech Assistant Job Description

Vet techs work with veterinarians, assisting them with routine exams and more complicated procedures. Not only do vet techs deal with records and talking with clients, but they also get to work hands-on with the animals.


Duties


Vet tech assistants' duties vary from practice to practice, but some typical duties include taking blood, clipping nails, taking vitals and assisting with births.


Skills


Vet techs are also responsible for asking and recording information about the pets' lifestyle. Information such as diet, behavior and weight gain or loss can help the veterinarian determine if there is a possible illness.


Education


According to StateUniversity.com, many community colleges offer two-year programs for those interested in becoming vet techs. All states require taking a credentialing exam once you graduate from such a program.


Considerations


Being a vet tech can be an emotionally exhausting job. You will work with sick and distressed animals and also be expected to assist the veterinarian when he euthanizes animals.
