Outside Heating units For Pets

Efficient outdoor heat is particulary important for dogs typically found indoors.

While most companion animals should be kept indoors during cold winter months, there are times when they need outdoor exercise or time to breath the fresh air. During these times, keeping pets comfortable is the key to their enjoyment of quality outside time. The first consideration when using any heat source for your companion animal is safety. Choose your heating products wisely based on your pet and outdoor environment.

Wall-Mounted Electric Heaters

Electric heaters installed indoors or outdoors and run on a standard 110V household current are a safe heating alternative for outdoor pets. Install a unit that has a protective cover, high enough on a protected wall to be safely out of the pet's reach. Some of these heaters are programmable allowing for power efficiency and safety. Wall-mounted heaters are manufactured by several companies. Choose one specifically suited for the area you need to heat.

Lectro-Kennel Outdoor Heated Pads

Lectro-Kennel has manufactured an outdoor heated pad made to keep your dog warm during cold winter months. While this is not an option for puppies or dogs that tend to be chewers, these pads can provide warmth to the calm pet. They are low voltage and come in small, medium and large. There is also a model made for outdoor cats. The pads feature chew resistant cords and are made to plug into 110V household current. They are programmable and will shut off when they reach and maintain a comfortable 102 degrees or other programmed temperature. The pads can use used on the floor or mounted on a wall to provide side warmth. Electro-Kennel pads are available from local and online pet supply retailers.

Professionally Installed Heat

Dogs that spend a lot of time outdoors in the winter should either be breeds genetically programed for outdoor living, such as the Siberian husky or Alaskan malamute, or provided with safe housing warmed by the use of proper materials and professionally installed heat. For dogs or cats that spend most of their time in outdoor kennels, position the kennel next to your home or garage and provide an enclosure equipped with professionally installed heat. Solicit a heating professional to run a heating duct from your home to a vent in the wall of the dog house. Vents should be placed where they cannot be clogged by bedding or the dog laying against the vent. Use a screen-covered vent adjusted to provide just the right amount of warmth.

Hound Heater

Manufactured specifically for use in outdoor dog kennels, the Hound Heater by Akoma Dog Products, LLC is a thermostatically controlled non-replaceable long lasting Mika outdoor heating unit. According to the company, installation can be completed in minutes and the unit has been specifically manufactured to be used safely around dogs.
