French Bulldogs are small dogs, while American Pit Bull Terriers are much bigger.
Man's best friend comes in all shapes and sizes. From pure bred dogs to mutts, there is a type of dog to suit nearly any need. However, the breeding of "hybrid" dogs, or a dog conceived from the breeding of two different purebred lineages, has become increasingly popular. One hybrid possibility is the cross of a French Bulldog with an American Pit Bull Terrier. However, in order to successfully breed these two types of dogs, there are multiple steps that must be taken to ensure the health and safety of the bitch and her puppies.
Instructions
1. Outline a budget for the breeding process. Consider stud fees, veterinary care, puppy vaccinations and allow room for unexpected expenses, such as a cesarean section. Be prepared to spend between $2,000 to $6,000, depending on the amount of care required by the bitch and puppies.
2. Locate a suitable male French bulldog to act as the stud for the breeding via the United Kennel Club or a reputable breeder in your area. Thoroughly research the bloodline of each dog by tracing its lineage through registration papers. When mating two different breeds, it is essential for both dogs to be from purebred backgrounds.
3. Make an appointment to visit a veterinarian who specializes in breeding practices. In addition to a thorough health exam, request a behavioral evaluation for both the Pit Bull bitch and French Bulldog stud, as well as a genetics test, to ensure that both dogs will be passing along desirable traits. Have the bitch evaluated for her ability to safely carry a litter of puppies.
4. Locate a suitable home for each of the puppies that may result from the breeding process. Pit Bulls can whelp litters of up to 10 puppies, and individuals who choose to breed dogs must be responsible for placing the puppies in good homes, with a signed spay/neuter agreement, prior to their birth.
5. Monitor the Pit Bull bitch's heat cycle. Approximately 14 days after the cycle has begun and only a light pink discharge is visible from the vulva, place the two dogs together in an enclosed area. Monitor the dogs while together to ensure that the Pit Bull accepts mounting from the French Bulldog and that mating is completed. Stage another mount two to three days after the initial encounter to help bolster the chances of successful breeding.
6. Take the bitch to the veterinarian no less than 14 days after breeding for an ultrasound to detect pregnancy. If the mating attempt was successful, make a care plan for the bitch's pregnancy with your veterinarian. If not, you may try to breed again during the next heat cycle.
