Suggestions For Decorative Outside Dog Runs

Ideas for Decorative Outdoor Dog Runs

A dog run is basically a fenced-off area where your pet can be outdoors while still protected from dangers like getting bitten by rodents, eating poisonous plants, falling into an unfenced pool or running away from home and getting lost. However, a dog run doesn't have to be boring; you can decorate it to make it feel like a place where your dog wants to be.

Flooring

Most of the time, the floor of a dog run is made out of grass or concrete because these are the easiest to maintain. However, you can be more creative with the floor. Some inexpensive hardwood flooring, carpet or even linoleum can help make a simple dog run more interesting. It all depends on how creative you want to get, but you can even create a dog run that has different flooring for different "rooms." For example you can have grass for the "outside" and carpet for the "inside." If you include flooring, be prepared to clean it so that your dog isn't walking around in its own waste, which could be dangerous to its health.

Furniture

Dogs like furniture just as much as we do. A couch not only provides a comfortable place to sit but it is warm, cushy and entertaining to jump on and off of, crawl under and run around. If you have old furniture lying around, or you don't mind paying a few dollars for some old furniture from a thrift store or yard sale, then decorate your dog's outdoor dog run with a couch, chair, mattress or all of the above. Some dogs may be prone to tearing furniture apart, and this might be one of the reasons why your pet is spending more time in a dog run than it is indoors. In these cases, it is better to avoid placing furniture inside the dog run to prevent the dog from ingesting some furniture material that might be dangerous to its health.

Wall Decorations

Even though your dog run is just a fenced-off area in your backyard, you can add some charm to the dog run if you put something on the walls. It doesn't have to be a Picasso. Consider adding a cheaply framed portrait of the family or the dog, some artwork by the kids or even a few of the dog's favorite toys hung up low to the ground for entertainment. Most of the time, the wall decorations will be more for your sake than the dog's, but it's still worth decorating to spruce up the stark space.
