Teach your Redbone to use trees to its advantage.
The hunting method of the Redbone Coonhound is to track down a raccoon and chase it up into a tree where the hunter can easily catch it. While most Redbones are born with a natural instinct to "tree" prey, they do need training and guidance to be effective hunters. The training tools used are not for the weak of stomach, but they tap into your Redbone's love of the chase and help it focus on the role of the tree.
Instructions
1. Create a practice trail using the prey carcass, preferably that of a raccoon. Secure a rope to the prey animal and pull it on the ground in a straight line headed toward the tree you'll use for practice.
2. Slide the prey animal up the tree to mimic the scent pattern that would be left by a live animal climbing the tree.
3. Secure the prey carcass to a low branch on the tree, by using a sturdy ladder or carefully climbing the tree. The carcass should be low enough that your Redbone can see it but not close enough for it to jump and catch the animal.
4. Attach the leash and collar to your dog.
5. Start your dog at the beginning of the trail you've made, letting it catch the scent of the prey. Allow your dog to begin following the trail, but don't let go of the leash.
6. Walk or run along the trail with your dog, using praise and gentle tugs on the leash to keep it on track and discourage distractions. Help your dog to follow the trail all the way to the practice tree.
7. Encourage your dog to put its front paws on the tree by patting the tree with your hand and using a command such as "Up!" This helps your dog get closer to the scent trail going up the trunk. Also reward your dog for barking up at the tree branches or prey animal.
8. Give your dog lots of praise and rewards for staying at the tree and continuing to bark at the prey. Use high-value treats such as hot dogs, cooked meat or anything your dog loves. Only give that particular treat when your Redbone performs the treeing behavior.
9. Redirect your dog gently with the leash if your Redbone attempts to run to a different tree or another area, and give it rewards for coming back to the correct tree with your guidance.
